Grade 2 Field Trip – Problem Based Learning

During our recent Grade 2 field trip to the organic farm, we had an exciting opportunity to explore the world of urban farming and understand the significance of adopting sustainable practices in agriculture. This immersive, problem-based learning experience highlighted innovative farming techniques designed to address the challenges of limited space and water conservation in urban areas.
One of the key concepts we discovered was vertical gardening, a method that optimizes available space by allowing plants to grow upwards rather than spreading out horizontally. Additionally, we observed the effective use of drip irrigation, which ensures crops receive the right amount of water directly at their roots, promoting healthy growth while minimizing waste.
To make the experience even more hands-on, students participated in planting their own herbs and vegetables in containers. These plants were taken home, encouraging students to reflect on and apply what they learned about sustainable urban farming.
